Tonight’s Irish dinner: a traditional soup of questionable items from the refrigerator, freezer, and cellar, all left over from the depths of snow and darkness of winter.

  • Carrots and celery which may predate the fridge
  • potatoes from some time before memory
  • and ham that I don’t remember putting in the freezer at all
  • Onions too. They’re not questionable. They’re from last fall’s garden
  • Water, straight from the tap

Were I to serve this to you in my fine-dining restaurant, it’d be eaten from old leather boots off the floor with pewter spoons.A Stew to Forget You
